Matt Niskanen ejected for crosscheck to head of Sidney Crosby

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby was forced to leave Game 3 against the Washington Capitals at 5:24 of the first period after he was crosschecked in the face by Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen, who received a 5-minute major penalty and a game misconduct

Just before the blow by Niskanen, Crosby had also been clipped in the face by the stick of Alex Ovechkin. His knee seemed to be at an awkward angle and he was going down when he was struck by Niskanen, who used to be Crosby’s teammate in Pittsburgh.

The Penguins, leading 2-0 in the best-of-seven series, didn’t cash in on the power play and then fell behind 1-0 later in the period when Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom scored on a 5-on-3 power-play chance.
