If you’re a veteran NBA referee, you’ve heard every insult under the sun and then some. And perhaps you’ve had a few quips ready to respond to some of the chirping, or at least thought of them in your head.
What we have here is Marc Davis, a zebra who heard from a loud heckler during a stoppage in Tuesday’s Rockets win over the Thunder and came up with a pretty great response while keeping his cool. Did he have this one planned? If not, well played:
“I actually have my doctorate in reffing.” Perfect, isn’t it? What do you say to that? That’s a perfect shutdown response.
Just for fun, I looked around to see if Davis – an official for the last 17 NBA seasons – had some kind of Ph.D (I know, there isn’t a program in officiating, but still!). I did stumble upon his bio that said he’s in the Chicago Public League Hall of Fame, which is something.
Couple that and his NBA and CBA experience, and I’d say that’s enough to call the guy Dr. Marc Davis, especially after he taught us all a lesson in how to handle a heckler.
